SUMMARY
The Senior Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the architecture, performance, reliability, and strategic direction of a hybrid database environment supporting business-critical financial systems, including the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), risk systems, and front-office applications.
Operating within a 24/7 staff augmentation model, this role provides technical leadership across Microsoft SQL Server (primary), Oracle (OCI), and Azure database platforms. The Senior DBA serves as an escalation point for complex incidents, leads proactive optimization initiatives, and supports cloud migration strategies aligned with enterprise data center exit goals.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP
- Lead administration of Microsoft SQL Server environments across Production, UAT, and Dev.
- Provide architectural oversight for hybrid database deployments (on-premises, Azure, and OCI).
- Serve as a Tier 3 escalation point for high-severity incidents.
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective action planning.
- Collaborate with business leaders to help deliver technical database roadmaps that support overall business goals.
- PERFORMANCE AND OPTIMIZATION
- Proactively analyze and optimize database performance.
- Partner with development teams to tune complex queries and improve application efficiency.
- Identify systemic performance risks before business impact.
- Oversee capacity planning and database growth forecasting.
- HIGH AVAILABILITY AND RESILIENCE
- Design and maintain high-availability and disaster recovery solutions (Always On, clustering, replication).
- Ensure 24/7 operational readiness and SLA compliance.
- Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing exercises.
- Maintain escalation trees and critical response procedures.
- CLOUD AND STRATEGIC INITIATIVES
- Support migration of on-premises EDW and risk databases to Azure.
- Provide technical input into the data center exit strategy.
- Advise on modernization of legacy database workloads.
- Support Oracle databases hosted in OCI and coordinate with third-party vendors when applicable.
- OPERATIONAL GOVERNANCE
- Enforce best practices across change management, incident management, and documentation standards.
- Ensure all operational work is tracked in Jira.
- Maintain high-quality documentation in Confluence.
- Mentor junior DBAs and validate their work output.
- RISK AND COMPLIANCE
- Operate within a regulated financial services environment.
- Support audit, security, and compliance reviews.
- Ensure database security standards are maintained.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Seven or more years of enterprise database administration experience.
- Deep expertise in Microsoft SQL Server (2016 or later preferred).
- Strong experience with Always On Availability Groups, clustering and replication, backup and recovery strategies, and performance tuning and indexing strategies.
- Experience managing Azure SQL environments.
- Experience supporting hybrid cloud architecture.
- Proven experience in 24/7 high-availability environments.
- Strong working knowledge of structured ITSM processes, including Jira and ITIL frameworks.
NICE TO HAVE
- Experience supporting financial services platforms, including EDW, risk systems, and OMS.
- Oracle database administration experience, with OCI exposure preferred.
- Experience working within staff augmentation models.
- Familiarity with job scheduling systems such as Autosys and an understanding of separation of duties.
- Experience contributing to large-scale cloud migration programs.
