Job Description
The Didipio mine is located on Luzon Island in the Philippines and is the Company’s only asset that produces both gold and copper. Didipio was built by OceanaGold in 2013 and operates fully as an underground mine, with over 800 employees that support the mine.
OceanaGold is seeking a suitably qualified, experienced, and reliable Senior Legal Counsel (Didipio & Makati) who will be responsible for ensuring that OceanaGold complies with Philippine laws, and with internal policies and standards on good governance, ethics, and internal controls. This job includes legal and litigation management, government relations / stakeholders management, corporate housekeeping, and other related legal works. The role will report to the Manager‑Legal, and Company Secretary.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Develop and implement effective legal strategies to address complex issues, including litigation, regulatory compliance, labor, and dispute resolution.
- Represent the organization in litigation, negotiations, settlement discussions, grievance management, or hearings, demonstrating persuasive oral advocacy skills.
- Manage a diverse portfolio of legal matters, prioritizing tasks and allocating resources effectively to achieve legal goals.
- Conduct stakeholder mapping according to OceanaGold standards and recommend appropriate engagement strategies.
- Help manage external relationships to maximize OceanaGold’s influence and credibility.
- Proactively identify opportunities to use stakeholder engagement to deliver strategic benefits.
- Engage effectively on complex issues with hostile stakeholders.
- Develop and implement contractor management strategies that align with legal requirements, risk management principles, and industry standards.
- Conduct thorough due diligence on potential contractors, assessing their financial stability, track record, and compliance history.
- Act as a liaison between contractors and legal counsel to resolve contractual disputes, claims, or legal issues effectively.
Qualifications
Behavior consistent with OceanaGold Values and the OceanaGold Way.Graduate of Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor.Member of the Philippine Bar in good standing.Minimum of 5 years in the practice of law with excellent knowledge and understanding of legal framework and litigation.At least 3 years of experience or exposure in government relations, legal management, compliance and permitting in the mining or related industry.General knowledge of civil, criminal, and other laws.Satisfactory knowledge of corporate and tax laws.Excellent knowledge of mining‑related laws such as the Mining Act, FTAAs, and Department Orders related to Health, Safety, Environment, Social Performance, and Mining Operations.Broad knowledge of mining permitting and compliances.Good decision‑making skills.Strong writing and oral communication, negotiation, resilience, people skills, and team player.Drive for continuous improvement and innovation.Flexible to work across both the Makati office and Didipio site.Benefits
