Research Engineer – Advanced Manufacturing (Robotics & Additive Manufacturing) – P1
Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated Research Engineer to join our Advanced Manufacturing team with a focus on Robotics and Additive Manufacturing (AM). This role is ideal for an engineer with strong technical skills in automation and digital manufacturing, who also brings a foundational understanding of materials science to support process development and material-technology alignment.
You’ll work on next-generation manufacturing solutions involving robotic integration, 3D printing, and smart production systems across multiple application areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and optimize robotic systems for automated and autonomous manufacturing workflows.
- Support the design and implementation of additive manufacturing processes for both prototyping and functional parts.
- Integrate robotics into AM systems for tasks such as material handling, inspection, and post-processing.
- Develop control algorithms and automation scripts using tools such as ROS, Python, or PLC programming environments.
- Troubleshoot and improve existing manufacturing setups, emphasizing repeatability, precision, and throughput.
- Apply basic materials knowledge to support selection and qualification of polymers, metals, and composites for AM applications.
- Interpret material property data and failure modes to recommend design and process changes.
- Collaborate with materials engineer to understand interactions between processing parameters and material behavior.
General Responsibilities
- Contribute to experimental design, data collection, and analysis of manufacturing process performance.
- Work collaboratively across engineering disciplines to scale lab concepts into robust production-ready systems.
- Document processes, findings, and results in technical reports and presentations.
- Stay up to date with advancements in robotics, additive manufacturing, and smart materials.
- Operate and maintain laboratory and workshop equipment, including 3D printers, Robotic arms, and Automation rigs.
- Perform testing and characterization of materials, components, and assemblies.
- Document test procedures, analyze results, and prepare reports with recommendations.
Required Qualifications
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Strong foundation in robotics, automation, or controls engineering.
- Hands-on experience with additive manufacturing systems (Desktop FDM)
- Familiarity with basic materials science principles and their relevance to manufacturing processes.
- Knowledgeable in CAD (e.g., CATIA, NX, Fusion 360) and programming/scripting languages (e.g., Python, C++).
- Strong problem-solving abilities and communication skills.
- Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies.
- Ability to collaborate with other team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of AM post-processing techniques and quality inspection methods.
- Exposure to material testing techniques or design-for-AM principles.
- Familiarity with simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus, or robotic path simulation).
