ResponsibilitiesPatient preparation : Ensure patients are comfortable and ready for treatment Instrument preparation : Sterilize instruments and equipment, and prepare fillings and other materials X-rays : Take and develop X-rays, and perform complex radiography Patient care : Assist the dentist during procedures, and manage patients during treatment Patient education : Instruct patients on proper oral hygiene and how to maintain their oral health Record keeping : Maintain patient records, including medical history, dental charting, and treatment records Scheduling : Schedule patient appointments, and may also perform initial patient assessments Billing : Work with patients on billing and insurance, and may prepare invoices and process payments Supplies : Order and stock supplies, and may unpack supplies when needed Emergencies : Help manage dental and medical emergencies Dental assistants may also assist with specialized dentistry, such as orthodontia, periodontia, surgery, or prosthetics.
