About the Role
This role sits at the center of the bank’s digital architecture, leading the engineering teams that design, build, and scale the enterprise API platform. The Head of API Engineering drives API standardization, platform reliability, reusability, and governance across all business units. You’ll partner closely with Architecture, Security, Channels, Core Banking, and Digital Product teams to ensure APIs enable faster, safer, and more modular delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end API engineering roadmap for the bank, ensuring uptime, scalability, and future-readiness of the platform.
- Lead API design, development, deployment, and lifecycle management across microservices and integration layers.
- Establish and enforce API standards, versioning practices, reusability principles, and common patterns (REST, event-driven, GraphQL where applicable).
- Drive adoption of API governance frameworks like BIAN , OpenAPI standards, and domain-driven design.
- Oversee the API developer portal, documentation frameworks, sandbox environments, and onboarding journeys for internal teams and external partners.
- Partner with InfoSec to ensure all APIs meet strong authentication, authorization, and data protection standards (OAuth2.0, JWT, mTLS, zero-trust design).
- Manage engineering teams, vendors, and partners delivering API and integration services.
- Build performance monitoring capabilities, analytics, throttling policies, and SLA definitions for all services.
- Champion reusability — identify reusable services, common components, accelerators, and reference architectures.
- Drive modernization of legacy integrations into modern microservices / API‑first designs.
- Provide technical leadership during incident resolution, capacity planning, and platform scaling.
- Report platform KPIs, reliability metrics, and API adoption dashboards to leadership.
