Key Responsibilities
- Review patient records to assign accurate diagnostic and procedural codes using ICD-10-CM and CPT coding systems
- Ensure compliance with federal regulations, state laws, and payer requirements
- Analyze and organize medical records, noting any missing information
- Protect patient information from unauthorized access
- Stay updated with coding changes to correctly code diagnoses, procedures, and medications
Requirements
Education : Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a related medical fieldCertifications : Active license as a medical coder (CPC, CCS, CIC, or equivalent) from a recognized accrediting bodyExperience : At least 1-2 years of experience in medical coding, with some companies requiring 3-5 years of clinical experienceSkills : Proficient in computer applications, automated encoder systems, and electronic health records (EHR) systemsKnowledge : Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology, as well as US insurance plan structure and HIPAA regulations
