The Occupational Dentist is responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, and managing oral health conditions that may affect an employee’s ability to perform safely and effectively at work. This role involves conducting dental fitness-for-duty examinations, managing work-related dental injuries, and providing guidance on preventive oral health programs tailored to specific workplace hazards.
Key Responsibilities and Clinical Care
- Perform comprehensive dental examinations for pre‑employment, periodic, and return‑to‑work evaluations.
- Diagnose and manage conditions such as bruxism, TMJ disorders, chemical erosion, and dental trauma related to occupational hazards.
- Provide acute care and treatment for workplace‑related dental injuries.
- Evaluate employees’ suitability for respirator masks, including oral and dental factors that may compromise seal integrity.
Occupational Health & Safety
Assess workplace conditions and identify oral health risks (chemicals, dust, pressure changes, stress‑related habits).Recommend protective devices such as custom athletic mouthguards or splints.Collaborate with safety officers to implement oral‑health‑related workplace controls and policies.Documentation & Reporting
Prepare detailed dental reports for fitness assessments, injury documentation, and workers’ compensation cases.Maintain accurate dental records according to organizational and regulatory standards.Participate in interdisciplinary health meetings and provide expert dental opinions.Education & Prevention
Develop and deliver workplace oral health programs and training sessions.Advise employees on preventive practices, ergonomics for TMJ health, and nutrition that affects oral wellness.Professional Collaboration
Coordinate with occupational physicians, hygienists, HR, and safety departments.Support compliance with local occupational health regulations and company policies.Required Qualifications & Certifications
Education :
Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from an accredited dental school.Licensure :
Active dental license in the region / country of practice.Registration with the national dental council / board.Seniority level
